Harwell Bowls Club

The Bowls Club was formed in July 1934. The opening ceremony was performed by Dr Rice, and was reported in the local newspaper:

“A bowls club was formally opened on the Recreation Ground at Harwell on Wednesday. It is a three-rink green, primarily intended for the use of working men.

Mr H.S. Baker, who has taken a prominent part in the formation of the club, in asking Dr Rice to bowl the first wood, said ‘This is an epoch-making event in Harwell. It is the work of three men – Mr Selwyn Caudwell, who has looked after the finance, Sergeant Martin and Mr A. Wood, who have put hours of gratuitous labour into preparing the green.’ A generous donation from the Berkshire Playing Fields Association helped pay the costs. Miss Keyser, of Aldermaston Court, gave twelve pairs of woods.

‘This is a working men’s club,’ said Mr Baker ‘and I will ask the hardest working man in the village, Dr Rice, to send down the first jack.’

Dr Rice congratulated the club on having an excellent green.”
